Location: Trafalgar Square North Terrace, London WC2N
Lead Pimpers: Richard Reynolds and Emma Allen
First planted: 20 – 21 April 2012
Description: The Greater London Authority hosted a St George’s Day celebration by having the square filled with a one day garden festival. Pimp Your Pavement contributed with a pop up pimped pavement that was both planted and painted with bright flowers. As you probably know there are no empty tree pits in Trafalgar Square so we create one ourselves by bringing in concrete paving slabs and kerb stones and borrowed a pear tree as the centrepiece. Throughout the event Emma Allen painted a spectacular mural of flowers onto the paving slabs, drawing a crowd of entranced onlookers who I think introduced to the idea of pimping their own pavements in a more modest manner. All the materials have since been recycled in guerrilla gardens and the Mobile Gardeners’ Park. Thanks also to Victoria Pearce, Lyla Patel, Niloufer Patel and Ben Mason.
