Location: Union Street, London SE1
Lead Pimpers: Richard Reynolds
First planted: 30 May 2011
Description: Five tree pits on Union Street, three of which are attractively round and deep set into stone, offer great potential and are a frontier at the north of Southwark for my activity. We began pimping here in partnership with the pop up Urban Physic Garden, as an effort to better engage local residents with permanent improvements to their realm. Flyers posted in advance did the trick and a couple of people enthusiastically joined in with the planting and even passers by joined in to transform the beds with lavender, cat mint, salvia, marigolds and cosmos. As an experiment in engagement beyond this the project has been less successful, perhaps because the initital planting was rather too easily provided for by me as Father Christmas. I have since returned more than I hoped was necessary to maintain the beds and plant up with tulips.
